Doepfer A-118-2 Noise / Random
White, colored noise and wandering random voltage generator
4 HP Eurorack module
The A-118 Noise/Random is a noise and random voltage generator that produces white noise, colored noise, and a continuously varying random voltage. It is a foundational modular utility for creating organic textures, wind effects, generative melodies, and unpredictable control voltages with musical character ranging from harsh digital chaos to slow drifting randomness.
Features
- White noise output with flat frequency spectrum
- Colored noise output with mixable Red (low frequency) and Blue (high frequency) components
- Random voltage output derived from colored noise via low pass filtering
- Rate knob controls cycle time of random voltage from fast (pink noise-like) to slow
- Level knob controls amplitude of random voltage output
- Two LEDs (Random Control + and -) indicate polarity and amplitude of random voltage
- Blue and Red knob settings affect both the colored output and the random voltage output
- Random voltage can optionally be derived from white noise output via internal modification
Controls & Jacks (12)
- White — White noise output containing all audio frequencies at random amplitude
- Red — Control for red noise component (low frequency components) in colored noise output
- Level — Control for amplitude of random voltage output
- Blue — Control for blue noise component (high frequency components) in colored noise output
- TH/SH
- Rate — Control for cycle time of random voltage; 0 means fast changes (pink-like spectrum), 10 means slow changes
- Random Output — Random voltage output whose rate of change and amplitude are determined by Rate and Level controls
- RND
- Colored — Colored noise output whose spectrum is determined by Blue and Red control positions
- Clk
- Random Control + — LED indicator showing positive state of random voltage with relative brightness indicating amplitude
- Random Control — LED indicator showing positive state of random voltage with relative brightness indicating amplitude
