Stereo color repeater from microsound to infinity

The Mimeophon is a stereo multi-zone color audio repeater by Make Noise and soundhack, coded by Tom Erbe. It morphs continuously between Karplus-Strong synthesis, flange, chorus, echo, and looping across eight color-coded zones spanning microsound to 41-second phrase loops. Its character is rich and alive, coloring repeats with spectral transformations from dark oil-can warmth to crispy digital shimmer while spatializing them in stereo space.

- Full stereo in and out with L input normalled to R for mono use
- Eight color-coded zones spanning 1.3ms to 41.796s repeat lengths
- Zones are nested — incoming audio writes to ALL zones simultaneously
- Continuous Rate parameter with doppler pitch shifting on modulation
- Doppler-free tempo sync via TEMPO input with slew-less crossfade
- TEMPO input usable as tap tempo by patching a gate and tapping twice
- Rate multiples and divisions from x2 to /2 across 13 steps when clocked
- Skew mode creates independent left/right repeat rates from single Rate control
- Ping Pong mode bounces repeats between left and right channels
- Swap mode swaps left/right feedback paths when Skew is active
- HOLD button for non-destructive infinite loop manipulation
- FLIP button for reverse playback in medium/large zones
Controls & Jacks (29)
- L Input — Signal input for Left Channel. Modular signal level (typically 10Vpp).
- R Input — Signal input for Right Channel. Modular signal level (typically 10Vpp). Normalled to L Input.
- Mix — Sets mix between Live Signal and Repeats. Works as attenuator when Mix CV is patched.
- L Output — Signal output for Left Channel. Modular signal level (typically 10Vpp).
- R Output — Signal output for Right Channel. Modular signal level (typically 10Vpp).
- Mix CV — CV input for Mix. Range 0-8V. Normalled to 8V.
- Repeats CV — CV Input for Repeats. Range 0-8VDC.
- Halo CV — CV Input for Halo. Range 0-8VDC.
- Repeats — Sets number of Repeats from 1 to infinity. When HOLD is engaged, sets Repeats start point.
- Rate CV — CV input for Rate. Range 0-8VDC.
- Rate CV Attenuverter — Bipolar input attenuverter for Rate CV Input.
- Halo — Sets Halo amount, smearing Repeats in stereo space.
- Zone — Selects Zone. Current Zone indicated by Zone Window.
- Rate — Sets frequency of Repeats in current Zone. When Skew is on, Rate controls Left and Right Repeat frequency in opposite directions.
- Color — Adjusts Color to focus feedback energy for timbral shifts. Unity at ~3:00 position.
- Zone CV Attenuverter — Bipolar CV input attenuator for Zone CV Input.
- Zone CV — CV control over Zone Selection. Range 0-8VDC.
- microRate — Un-attenuated doppler modulation destination. Tracks 1v/oct in Zone 0. Range +/-3V. Unity Gain.
- Color CV Attenuverter — Bipolar input attenuator for Color CV Input.
- FLIP Input — Expects Gate of 2.5V or greater. Toggles FLIP on and off.
- HOLD Input — Expects Gate of 2.5V or greater. Toggles HOLD on and off.
- TEMPO Input — Expects regular clock pulse of 2.5V or greater. When in use, RATE will synchronize to divisions/multiples of the Tempo.
- RATE Output — Trigger output containing an OR of both channels' rates, 0V or 8VDC.
- FLIP — Press to Flip Repeats so they are heard in reverse.
- HOLD — Press to HOLD Repeats indefinitely and non-destructively. When HOLD is engaged, Repeats control sets Repeat start point.
- SKEW — Press to skew Left and Right repeat rates apart. Hold to engage Ping Pong (or Swap if already skewed). LED lights when Skew is active.
- Color CV — CV Control over Color. Range 0-8VDC.
- RATE Output LED — Flashes at the current Rate; flashes irregularly when Skew is active.
- Zone Window — Color indicates currently selected Zone. Flashes when Ping Pong or Swap is engaged.
