Qu-Bit Electronix Chance
I Ching-inspired chance operations modulation for Eurorack
14 HP Eurorack module
Chance is a chance-operations modulation source inspired by John Cage and the I Ching, generating random voltages across four distinct algorithms: smooth, discrete, wavetable, and blend. It produces musical randomness through a digitally generated coin toss system, with each clock pulse reseeding all outputs with new values. Beyond CV, it also outputs erratic gate bursts, autonomous rhythmic triggers, analog white noise, and digital noise, making it a complete generative engine.
Features
- Chance operations inspired by John Cage and the I Ching
- Four random voltage outputs: Smooth, Discrete, Wavetable, Blend
- Attenuverters on all four CV outputs with range of 0V to +/-8V
- Smooth output: continuously slewing random voltage targeting a new random destination
- Discrete output: stepped random voltage updated on each clock pulse
- Wavetable output: tempo-synced LFO with 8 randomly selected wavetables and 5 clock divisions or multiplications
- Blend output: morphs between all four algorithms with Blend Knob and CV
- Four LED blend indicators showing currently selected algorithm
- Coin Toss button reseeds all outputs with new random values
- Freeze button holds all outputs at current state
- Freeze CV input for gate-controlled freeze
- Internal clock with rate range of 15 seconds per pulse to 50Hz
Controls & Jacks (25)
- Smooth CV In — CV input for the smooth random output, modulating its probability or range.
- Discrete CV In — CV input for the discrete (stepped) random output.
- Wavetable CV In — CV input for the wavetable random output.
- Blend CV In — CV input for the blend parameter, crossfading between random sources.
- Smooth Atten. — Attenuverter for the smooth CV input, scaling and inverting the modulation.
- Discrete Atten. — Attenuverter for the discrete CV input.
- Wavetable Atten. — Attenuverter for the wavetable CV input.
- Blend Atten. — Attenuverter for the blend CV input.
- Coin Toss — Generates a single random coin-toss event, outputting a random gate or CV value.
- Freeze — Freezes all random outputs at their current values until released.
- Blend — Crossfades between the different random source types (smooth, discrete, wavetable).
- Clock Rate — Sets the internal clock rate for random value generation when no external clock is present.
- Freeze Amount — Controls the probability of freezing — higher values increase the chance of holding the current value.
- Clock In — External clock input — triggers new random values on each pulse.
- Freeze In — Gate input to freeze all outputs at their current values.
- Clock Out — Clock output, passing through or generating clock pulses.
- Burst Out — Burst random output — generates clusters of random gates.
- White Out — White noise random output.
- Digital Out — Digital noise random output with bitcrushed character.
- Rhythm Out — Rhythmic random gate output with musical timing variations.
- Main Out 1 — Main random CV/gate output 1.
- Main Out 2 — Main random CV/gate output 2.
- Main Out 3 — Main random CV/gate output 3.
- Mode LED 1 — Indicates the current output mode or probability state.
- Blend LED — Indicates the current blend position between random sources.
