Seaside Modular Proteus

Generative melodies between repetition and novelty.

16 HP Eurorack module

A generative melody sequencer that repeats an algorithmically created note sequence and can replace it with a new melody over time.

Features

  • Generates new melodies from the New Melody button, New Melody Trigger Input, or patience-driven automatic replacement.
  • Four-slot Pattern Bank for saving, loading, clearing, and trigger-cycling patterns.
  • Settings Mode provides alternate knob functions and four pattern-button options; knob locking prevents parameter jumps after changing modes.
  • Reversible front panel with an alternate, less-labelled side.

Controls & Jacks (37)

  • Pattern Slot 3— An unlit slot saves the current pattern, a lit slot loads its stored pattern, and a long press clears it.
  • Pattern Slot 2— An unlit slot saves the current pattern, a lit slot loads its stored pattern, and a long press clears it.
  • Density— Sets the proportion of sequence notes that play rather than rest.
  • Mutate— Sets the probability that one note changes on the next cycle.
  • Pattern Slot 1— An unlit slot saves the current pattern, a lit slot loads its stored pattern, and a long press clears it.
  • Length— Sets sequence length from 2 to 32 steps.
  • Patience— Sets how quickly the probability of a new melody rises; fully clockwise is infinite patience.
  • New Melody Trigger Input— Trigger input that generates a new melody.
  • Length CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for sequence length; the configurator can instead assign it to Gate Length.
  • Octave— Sets the probability of transposing the melody one octave above or below its base octave.
  • Transpose Input— 1V/oct transpose input summed with the generated pitch; it can be quantized to the selected scale when Quantize Notes is enabled.
  • Octave CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for octave-transposition probability.
  • Scale— Selects the scale or mode from which generated notes are drawn, including custom scales and tuning mode.
  • Reset Input— Trigger input that resets sequence playback to its first step.
  • Sleep— Sets the number of beats to wait after the sequence before repeating it.
  • Gate Output— Gate output for active sequence notes; it can optionally pass the input-gate length via the configurator.
  • Gate Input— Clock or gate input; each incoming pulse advances the sequence one step.
  • Density CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for note density.
  • Mutate CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for single-note mutation probability.
  • Next Pattern Trigger Input— Trigger input that loads the next occupied Pattern Bank slot, wrapping to the first filled slot.
  • Complexity CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for the complexity used when generating the next melody.
  • Patience CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for the rate at which a repeating melody is replaced; high CV can maintain infinite patience.
  • V/Oct Output— Quantized 1V/oct pitch output for the generated melody.
  • Sleep CV Input— Additive -5 V to +5 V CV input for the number of beats waited between sequence repetitions.
  • New Melody— Generates a new melody.
  • Step 7 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 7, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
  • Complexity— Sets the complexity of newly generated melodies.
  • Pattern Slot 4— An unlit slot saves the current pattern, a lit slot loads its stored pattern, and a long press clears it.
  • Step 1 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 1; green identifies the first step, and yellow indicates an octave transposition.
  • Step 3 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 3, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
  • Step 2 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 2, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
  • Step 8 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 8, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
  • Mode— Selects normal performance mode or Settings Mode, where silver-labelled knob functions and Pattern Bank options apply.
  • Step 5 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 5, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
  • Step 4 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 4, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
  • Melody Lock— Locks the melody to prevent automatic replacement, octave transposition, and mutation when in the lock position.
  • Step 6 Indicator— Independent multicolor indicator for step 6, showing active, resting, sleeping, mutated, or slewed status.
