Tiptop Audio Hats808
Authentic 808 hi-hats with voltage-controlled resonance for Eurorack
8 HP Eurorack module
The HATS808 is a one-to-one analog clone of the Roland TR-808 hi-hat sound generator adapted for Eurorack modular synthesizer use, featuring both Open Hat and Closed Hat voices with independent level, accent, and gate controls. The noise source uses six analog square wave oscillators mixed together and fed through a band-pass filter, producing the iconic metallic shimmer of the 808. An added voltage-controlled resonance circuit extends the original sound into new metallic, saturated, and oscillating timbres not found on the original machine.
Features
- One-to-one analog clone of Roland TR-808 hi-hat circuit
- Separate Open Hat (OH) and Closed Hat (CH) voices with independent outputs
- Noise source made of six analog square wave oscillators at specific frequencies
- Classic TR-808 choke function: CH envelope cuts OH VCA when both triggered simultaneously
- Choke function can be disabled via PCB header
- Independent LEVEL knob per voice with enhanced output gain stage allowing overdrive and clipping
- Independent ACCENT knob and ACCENT IN per voice for dynamic expression
- Gate signal normalized to accent input when no accent cable is connected
- DECAY knob for Open Hat envelope length control
- Voltage-controlled Resonance (Q) on main internal band-pass filter — addition not on original 808
- Q knob with 808 marked minimum position for authentic original tone
- Q knob range from authentic 808 sound through metallic, saturated, to self-oscillating filter
Controls & Jacks (15)
- OH Level — Controls the output gain level of the Open Hi-Hat sound
- CH Level — Controls the output gain level of the Closed Hi-Hat sound
- OH Accent In — Gate/trigger input for Open Hi-Hat accent control
- Q — Controls the resonance of the internal band-pass filter. Minimum position (marked '808') is the original unaffected sound. Turning away crea
- OH Out — Open Hi-Hat audio output
- CH Accent In — Gate/trigger input for Closed Hi-Hat accent control
- OH Accent — Controls the accent level for the Open Hi-Hat, providing emphasis through loudness and attack
- CH Accent — Controls the accent level for the Closed Hi-Hat, providing emphasis through loudness and attack
- Decay — Controls the decay time length of the Open Hi-Hat envelope (overridden by choke function when both hats are triggered simultaneously)
- CH Out — Closed Hi-Hat audio output
- OH Gate In — Gate/trigger input to trigger Open Hi-Hat
- CH Gate In — Gate/trigger input to trigger Closed Hi-Hat
- VC-Q (Band-Pass Out) — Band-pass filtered oscillator mix output
- VC-Q — 0-5V CV input for voltage control of resonance/Q. Q knob offsets the applied CV.
- Band-Pass Out — Band-pass filtered oscillator mix output
